Established in 2009 through the National Law School and Judicial Academy, Assam Act, 2009, NLUJAA is a premier public law university located in Amingaon, Guwahati, Assam. It was the first National Law University in Northeast India, aiming to provide high-quality legal education and research opportunities. The Hon'ble Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court serves as the Chancellor of the university.

Academic Programs

1. B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) – Five-Year Integrated Course

This undergraduate program integrates law with social sciences in the initial years, transitioning to specialized legal subjects in the later years. Students can choose from five streams in the fourth and fifth years:

  • Business and Intellectual Property Law

  • Constitutional and Administrative Law

  • Consumer Protection and Environmental Law

  • Criminal Law and Criminology

  • International Law and Human Rights​

The program follows a semester system, comprising ten semesters over five years.

2. One-Year LL.M. Program

The postgraduate program offers specializations in:

Students are required to complete three mandatory papers, six elective papers, and a dissertation.

3. Ph.D. Program

NLUJAA offers a doctoral program in law, fostering advanced research in various legal disciplines. The university currently hosts around 15 Ph.D. scholars.

Admission Process

Admissions to the B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) program are based on the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). The university admits 60 students per year, with reservations for various categories as per government norms.
