

Chatra College was established on July 1, 1961, under the leadership of Dr. Keshari Nandan Sahay, with the aim of providing higher education to students in the rural and economically backward areas of Jharkhand. Initially named Geeta Ashram Mahavidhyalaya, it was renamed Chatra College in 1963. The college was granted approval by Ranchi University in 1965 for degree courses and later became a constituent unit of Vinoba Bhave University (VBU), Hazaribagh, after the university's formation in 1992.
