Founding & Vision
Ghani Khan Choudhury Institute of Engineering & Technology (GKCIET), located in Malda, West Bengal, is a Centrally Funded Technical Institute (CFTI) under the Ministry of Education. Established in 2010 in memory of A.B.A. Ghani Khan Choudhury, the institute was created to bring quality engineering and vocational education to rural and underserved regions. Its mission focuses on producing technically skilled manpower, promoting entrepreneurship, and supporting inclusive socio-economic development.

Campus & Environment
The institute sits on a serene 101-acre campus in Narayanpur, Malda, surrounded by greenery and mango orchards. Despite being located in a rural belt, it is moderately accessible from Malda town and the railway station. The campus includes academic blocks, workshops, hostels, sports areas, and open fields, with ongoing development to expand infrastructure and laboratories.

Academic Programs
GKCIET offers a blend of degree, diploma, and vocational programs:

  • B.Tech Programs

    • Computer Science & Engineering (AI & ML)

    • Electrical Engineering

    • Mechanical Engineering

    • Civil & Environmental Engineering

    • Food Technology

  • Diploma Programs

    • Civil Engineering

    • Computer Science & Technology

The institute’s structure supports both formal engineering education and skill-based technical training, making it suitable for students from diverse academic backgrounds.

Admissions & Fees
B.Tech admissions are conducted mainly through WBJEE and JEE Main. Diploma admissions occur through state-level entrance examinations.
For 2025 admissions, the first-year B.Tech fees are around ₹1.54 lakh, while diploma fees remain very affordable, making the institute accessible to economically weaker sections. Hostel facilities are available at moderate cost.

Student Strength & Faculty
GKCIET has a steadily growing student population across B.Tech, diploma, and vocational programs. The faculty includes experienced academicians and engineers, with several departments working to upgrade labs and teaching facilities.

Placements & Career Opportunities
Placement performance at GKCIET is developing. In recent years, placement percentages for B.Tech students have hovered around 60–70%, with top packages reaching approximately ₹6–6.5 LPA in some branches. Students often pursue higher studies, off-campus job opportunities, or entrepreneurship. The institute’s rural location and developing infrastructure remain factors influencing placement outcomes, but efforts are ongoing to strengthen industry connections.

Challenges & Improvements
While GKCIET benefits from central government support, it continues to work on improving:

  • laboratory and workshop facilities

  • hostel infrastructure

  • industry partnerships

  • placement support and training
Students appreciate the affordability and opportunities for rural youth but also note the need for stronger campus recruitment and faster infrastructure expansion.

Future Outlook
GKCIET aims to evolve into a major technical hub in northern West Bengal. With its strong mandate for inclusive development, planned infrastructure growth, and focus on both engineering and vocational education, the institute is steadily shaping its identity as an important contributor to regional technical empowerment.
