Goreswar College

Established on August 29, 1974, Goreswar College is the premier institution of higher education in the northeastern part of Baksa District, Assam. Founded by a dedicated group of social workers and education enthusiasts from the Goreswar locality, the college began as an Arts College with a Pre-University (now Higher Secondary) course, enrolling 116 students. It achieved degree college status in the 1977-78 session. The college is affiliated with Gauhati University and has been provincialized by the Government of Assam since December 1, 2005.

Academic Programs

Goreswar College offers undergraduate programs in the following streams:

• Arts: Bachelor of Arts (BA) with Honours in Bodo, Education, Philosophy, Political Science, Assamese, and Economics.

• Commerce: Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com).

• Science: Bachelor of Science (B.Sc).

The college provides a total of 21 full-time courses, with a student enrollment of approximately 1,502 and 63 faculty members.

Campus Facilities

Goreswar College boasts a range of facilities to support both academic and extracurricular activities:

• Library: The central library houses 39,089 books, including textbooks and reference materials. It features separate reading rooms for students and teachers, with seating capacities of 50 and 20, respectively. The library is in the process of modernization and computerization .

• Laboratories: Well-equipped laboratories for various departments, including a computer lab with 15 computers and internet connectivity.

• Sports and Gymnasium: A playground for outdoor games, an indoor stadium for badminton and table tennis, and a gymnasium for physical fitness.

• Hostel: Separate hostels for boys and girls, providing accommodation for outstation students.

• Auditorium: A hall used for cultural programs, seminars, and competitions.

• Cafeteria: A canteen offering refreshments to students and staff.

Admission Process

Admission to Goreswar College is based on merit, with students evaluated according to their performance in previous qualifying examinations. The college offers Higher Secondary courses in Arts and Commerce streams under the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC), Guwahati, and three-year degree courses in Arts and Commerce streams under Dibrugarh University.

Achievements

In the 2023-24 academic year, Goreswar College was recognized as the Best Institution from Assam and the second-best institution in Northeast India for National Cadet Corps (NCC) activities.
