

National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), South Goa
The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), located in Vasco da Gama, South Goa, is India's premier institution dedicated to polar and ocean research. Established in 1998 under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, NCPOR leads India's scientific missions in the Arctic, Antarctic, Southern Ocean, and Himalayas. It manages India's key research stations including Bharati and Maitri in Antarctica and Himadri in the Arctic. The institute also operates ocean research vessels and manages several scientific programs.

Ph.D. Program
Eligibility:
First-class M.Sc./M.Tech. (≥60%) in Marine Sciences, Oceanography, Atmospheric Sciences, Geology, Geophysics, Earth Sciences, Meteorology, Physics, Mathematics, or related fields.
Must have qualified NET-JRF (CSIR/UGC/DBT/DST) or have a provisional INSPIRE Ph.D. fellowship.
Age limit is 28 years (relaxation as per Government norms).

Post-Doctoral Program
Eligibility:
Ph.D. in Science or Engineering aligned with NCPOR’s research focus.
Candidates awaiting final Ph.D. award are also eligible.
Should have independent funding or fellowship.
First-class (≥60%) in Bachelor's and Master’s degrees.
Application Process:
Submit online application with a research proposal developed in consultation with an NCPOR scientist.
Internship & Dissertation Programs
Eligibility:
Final-year students of B.Sc./B.E./BCA/B.Tech.
M.Sc./M.E./MCA/M.Tech./M.A. students.
3rd year onward for 5-year integrated programs.
Final-year M.Sc. students can apply within the same year of completion.
Duration: 3 to 12 months

Submit a CV and recommendation letter from the Head of Department.
Secure consent from an NCPOR scientist prior to application.
Research & Facilities
NCPOR is equipped with advanced facilities including cold labs, sediment core repositories, and the National Antarctic Data Centre. It conducts studies in glaciology, marine geology, oceanography, and atmospheric sciences. The center is also a key participant in global programs like the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) and manages extensive surveys in India's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Expeditions & Field Opportunities
NCPOR annually organizes Indian Scientific Expeditions to Antarctica, typically involving 80–100 researchers. Participants are selected based on project relevance and expertise. Applications open in February–March and undergo a rigorous review process.
