Barpeta Girls' College was established on September 7, 1978, with the vision of spreading higher education among women in the Barpeta district. It stands as the sole women's higher educational institution in the district, aiming to empower women through education. The college is affiliated with Gauhati University and recognized under sections 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956. It was assessed and accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 2004 and 2016, receiving 'C' and 'B' grades respectively.

Infrastructure and Facilities

The college is situated on a 7-acre campus in the historically rich "Satra Nagari" of Barpeta. It offers a range of facilities to support academic and extracurricular activities:

• Library: A partially computerized central library with over 14,000 books, journals, and magazines.

• Hostel: Two well-equipped hostels providing accommodation for outstation students.

• Sports and Gym: Facilities to promote physical fitness and sportsmanship.

• Health Center: A first-aid facility to cater to students' health needs.

• Cafeteria: A canteen offering nutritious meals to students and staff.

• IT Infrastructure: Computer labs and internet facilities to enhance digital learning.

Academic Programs

The college offers undergraduate programs in both Arts and Commerce streams:

• Bachelor of Arts (BA): Majors in Assamese, English, Economics, Education, Philosophy, Political Science, Anthropology, and Home Science.

• Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com): Majors in Accountancy and Management (currently on self-financing mode).

The college follows the FYUGP (Four-Year Undergraduate Programme) introduced by Gauhati University from the academic session 2023-24, alongside the traditional TDC (Three-Year Degree Course) for existing students.
