Indian Institute of Astrophysics, [IIA] Bangalore

IIA was formed in 1971 when the former Astrophysical Observatory became an autonomous institute .

Its roots trace to the Madras Observatory (1792), which later became Kodaikanal Observatory before evolving into IIA .

Dr. Annapurni Subramaniam serves as the director, the first woman head of the institute .

The main campus is in Koramangala, Bengaluru (Koramangala, Bangalore‑560034) .

It conducts research in solar physics; stars & galaxies; theoretical astrophysics & cosmology; astronomical instrumentation; and space astronomy .
