Manonmaniam Sundaranar University was set up in 1990 by the Government of Tamil Nadu. It is situated in southern Tamil Nadu with a campus spread of 550 acres. It is a dynamic institution for higher learning. It caters to the needs of the people of the three southernmost districts of Tamil Nadu viz., Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, and Kanyakumari. The motto of the university is "In Pursuit of Excellence". It is named after the Tamil scholar/professor Manonmaniam Sundaram Pillai.
