Pramathesh Barua College, [PBC] Gauripur

Established on June 1, 1964, Pramathesh Barua College (PBC) is a prominent co-educational institution located in Gauripur, Assam. Named after the illustrious Rajkumar Pramathesh Chandra Barua, a luminary of Indian cinema, the college was founded with the vision of providing quality higher education to the youth of the region.

Initially supported by the local community and the Zamindar family of Gauripur, it was later taken over by the Government of Assam under the deficit grant-in-aid system in 1969. The college is affiliated with Gauhati University and recognized under Sections 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956.

Academic Programs

Undergraduate Courses:

• Higher Secondary (HS): Arts and Commerce streams

• Degree (BA & B.Com): Offered in Arts and Commerce

Postgraduate Programs:

• Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications (PGDCA): A one-year course introduced in the academic session 2018-2019.

Distance Education:

In collaboration with Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), PBC offers various undergraduate and postgraduate programs through Open Distance Learning (ODL), including:

• Undergraduate: BA, BSW

• Postgraduate: MA in English, Hindi, Sociology, Rural Development; MBA; MSW

• Diploma & Certificate Courses: Journalism and Mass Communication, Tourism Studies, Rural Development, Environmental Studies

Certificate Course:

• UGC Sponsored Certificate Course in Computer Applications: A six-month program aimed at enhancing computer literacy.

Infrastructure & Facilities

• Campus Area: Spanning 4.5 acres, the campus is equipped with modern amenities.

• Library: A well-stocked central library housing nearly 30,000 books, including textbooks, reference materials, and rare publications.

• Computer Lab: A state-of-the-art computer lab with 40 computers to promote digital literacy among students.

• Language Laboratory: Facilitates soft-skill development and effective communication.

• Hostel Facility: Currently, the college does not offer hostel accommodations.

Achievements & Initiatives

• NAAC Accreditation: The college is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a 'B' grade, reflecting its commitment to quality education.

• International Seminar: In February 2024, PBC hosted a two-day international seminar sponsored by the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR), Delhi, coinciding with the 514th birth anniversary of Bir Chilarai. The seminar was attended by dignitaries from India, Bhutan, Nepal, and Bangladesh.

• Professional Courses: The college has partnered with the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) to establish a study center, providing students with opportunities to pursue professional courses in Company Secretaryship
