B. Borooah College, established in 1943 by Assam's first Chief Minister, Gopinath Bordoloi, stands as a beacon of higher education in Northeast India. Named after philanthropist Bholanath Borooah, the college began as a night school to support working students during the freedom movement. Today, it operates as an autonomous institution affiliated with Gauhati University, offering a diverse range of academic programs.

B. In 2024, the University Grants Commission (UGC) granted the college autonomous status.​

In September 2024, the Assam government announced a ₹10 crore grant and additional land allocation for B. Borooah College to facilitate infrastructure and academic expansion. The expansion plans include incorporating nearby areas to enhance facilities and academic offerings.
