Gauhati University

Established on January 26, 1948, Gauhati University (GU) is the oldest and largest public state university in Northeast India. Situated in Guwahati, Assam, GU serves as a pivotal center for higher education, research, and cultural development in the region. History & Legacy

Founded by eminent personalities including Gopinath Bordoloi, Krishna Kanta Handique, and Birinchi Kumar Barua, GU began with 17 affiliated colleges and eight postgraduate departments. Over the decades, it has grown into a comprehensive institution with 39 postgraduate departments and over 300 affiliated colleges across 15 districts in Assam.
