

Established in 1927, HRH The Prince of Wales Institute of Engineering and Technology (POWIET) in Jorhat, Assam, stands as the oldest technical institute in Northeast India.
Founded with a generous donation from Assamese timber merchant Late Bholanath Barooah, the institute has evolved into a prestigious government-funded institution, affiliated with the State Council for Technical Education, Assam, and approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

POWIET's rich history includes its role as a "War Technical School" during World War II, serving as a base for American soldiers. In recognition of its academic excellence, four core diploma programs—Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, and Mechanical (Automobile) Engineering—received accreditation from the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) in 2019, aligning with the Washington Accord. This accreditation enhances the global employability of its graduates .
